Austin’s low income communities and communities of color suffer disproportionately from police misconduct and abuse of power. The rejected police contract was nationally renowned as lacking in basic accountability measures. I support a police contract that is fair to our officers and our community by way of increased oversight, transparency and accountability. I also support measures that preempt misconduct by expanding training modules, address implicit bias and create a more robust system for determining competence and compatibility during the interview, selection and training academy.
