(for City Council/Mayor) After much controversy, CodeNEXT was scrapped from consideration without leaving a solution to the affordable housing crisis in Austin. While much of the discussion has been on homeowners, the majority of Austinites are renters, particularly a significant portion of the population being young residents. What policies would you support to protect students and young renters from being taken advantage of?

Natasha Harper-Madison

City Council, District 1

I support policies such as the recent city council resolution that instilled greater tenant protections at affordable housing units extracted by the city. I support a Renters Commission and though council’s hands are tied in many respects with regard to tenant protections I will be an active voice for renters as a council member. I support  fair and comprehensive rental registration programs that protect renters from substandard property maintenance and landlords.
