How can we maximize transit ridership and decrease reliance on cars?

We can maximize transit ridership and decrease reliance on cars by making our transit options more robust, increasing frequency and for the love of all things reasonable- bus stops need shelter! Some additional ideas that make transit ridership more appealing include partnerships with employers and universities that offer incentives for transit riders including bus and train passes and more efforts to improve awareness of non car options.

A general lack of familiarity with the alternative options plays a part. When done well, outreach efforts for initiatives like “Smart Trips” can help acclimate folks new to transit ridership. Additionally, and very important to the conversation about reliance on cars is the need for more affordable housing near transit corridors and where people can walk or ride their bikes to work and play destinations.
