To me, affordability refers to the ability of residents of all means and backgrounds to live and thrive in our community. On a practical level, this means considering all of the costs it takes for a person to live, including housing, mobility, health care, child care, and more. Our federal, state, and local governments have established standards by which to judge affordability – such as “median family income” – and I use these measures when designing and analyzing public policy.
