How will you address Austin’s housing shortage? What regulations will you change to allow more housing where people want to live?

Steve Adler

Mayor

We have a big challenge when it comes to housing. It’s critically important that we make progress on reforming the land development code. CodeNEXT had lost the trust that we needed to form consensus in our community, but I haven’t given up on finding a new way forward there. Our new city manager is a very talented individual, and I look forward to his recommendations on how to use the work we have already done and how to forge a new process that builds greater community trust.

We need to increase housing supply. We need to increase housing density along corridors. At the micro level, I think we need to look carefully at contextual changes to compatibility, parking requirements, ADU regulations, density bonus programs, parking regs, and changes to existing commercial zoning categories to allow more housing in more places.
