Although Austin has remained a relatively safe city, there have been far too many shootings of African American men. What kind of changes would you institute at APD to reduce the number of officer-involved shootings and reduce the degree of mistrust that exists between the African American community and the police?

City Council, District 3

First, I might suggest that everybody participate in Undoing Racism or Beyond Diversity programming.  I clearly believe and know that the problem of shootings of innocent African American people, simply for “living while black” is an endemic, vile, and among the most profoundly disturbing social issues I’ve witnessed.  However, I can’t claim that I know enough to say what the police force needs to do to solve the problem; I don’t know enough about police operations and training programs–nor will I ever understand enough the experience of being black within the context of law enforcement, and  I’d need to speak with black community and black police leaders profoundly about what the solutions might be, what models of success might exist, and work from there. Before doing that, my first step would be to unequivocally recognize and acknowledge this terrible problem and share my immutable belief that Black Lives Matter.
