As a majority-minority state, what role do you see Austin playing in the long-term conversation around immigration and migrant rights?

I believe Austin’s elected leaders have a responsibility to speak out on immigration and migrant rights, as well as other state and national issues that affect the lives of Austin residents. I am proud of my record in this area, having served as lead sponsor for Resolution No. 20140626-099 in an effort to remove ICE from the Travis County Booking Facility.

But given the current climate, we must do more. While municipal governments have limited jurisdiction over these issues, we must use every resource – the bully pulpit, our legislative agenda, local organizing and other means – to protect the families of our community. As mayor, I will provide a strong voice on these and other issues that affect Austin residents.
