Affordable housing is a major problem in Austin. Large numbers of people who work in Austin cannot afford to live in Austin. Many families are moving outside the city to find affordable housing. Do you have any ideas to help create more affordable housing or to make existing housing more affordable?

Bobby Levinski

City Council, District 8

(i) First, we must establish “right to stay” policies that support and enhance Austin families’ ability to remain in their homes and in their neighborhoods. This would include dedicating funds towards tenant and homeowner assistance programs, to help residents keep up with the rising costs of living; establishing development protections for areas experiencing rapid levels of gentrification; and using strike funds to acquire the more-affordable housing stock that is at risk of demolition (and the resulting displacement); and (ii) We must significantly increase our investments in publicly-owned and managed housing, especially in areas that are historically lacking in lower-income housing (such as central and west Austin). I support Prop A, and I will make sure we leverage those funds to build as much income-restricted housing as possible.
