What do you see as the City’s responsibility toward addressing the digital divide in Austin, and what steps would you take to bridge that divide?

Amit Motwani

City Council, District 3

We must recognize that most low-income families and children have skipped the desktop computing step and are largely accessing the internet through mobile. As such, it is incumbent on leadership to acknowledge that:

  • a large degree of economic opportunity in the creative economy is stunted as a result of this, so we must continue to do our best to provide high quality broadband for all residents whenever possible to incentivize computer purchases and involvement
  • we must ensure that educational and outreach are all developed with the intent that they will be ingested or consumed by medium of mobile– it is the common denominator, and ironically we must design our human-centered systems around it.
