Laura Morrison
Mayor
All Austinites deserve the opportunity to share in our city’s success, regardless of age, ability, race, gender, sexual orientation or zip code. Yet too many residents have been left behind in recent years, including thousands of hardworking families and individuals who now struggle to afford Austin’s sharply rising cost of living. These pressures are especially acute on low-income residents and other vulnerable populations, whose quality of life – and sometimes even survival – often depend on Austin’s diverse network of nonprofit organizations. Because the City is responsible for the health, safety and welfare of its residents, it has a strong duty and incentive to partner with these nonprofit groups for the efficient delivery of critical services to residents in need. As a Council Member, I was a strong supporter of such partnerships and will continue this support as mayor. Austin’s disparities and inequities did not develop overnight and addressing them will require a multi-pronged approach. As mayor, I will initiate plans to ensure equal access for all residents across a number of issue areas, including measures to promote environmental equity, reduce gentrification and displacement, ensure LGBTQ equality, and promote access to housing, parks and open space, health and wellness, transportation and other elements essential to the quality of life for all Austin residents.
